Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Plantago species, particularly Plantago major and Plantago lanceolata, have a long history of traditional use in herbal medicine for various respiratory complaints, including symptoms associated with allergies such as cough, mild bronchial irritation, and catarrh. European and Asian folk medicine have used Plantago leaves as a soothing agent for inflamed mucous membranes and to ease breathing difficulties, which could overlap with symptoms seen in respiratory allergies. The traditional use is largely based on the demulcent (soothing) and anti-inflammatory properties attributed to the mucilage and iridoid glycosides present in the plant. However, while some laboratory studies suggest anti-inflammatory and mild antihistamine effects, there is little robust clinical evidence specifically supporting its use for allergic respiratory conditions like allergic rhinitis or asthma. Most modern herbal references mention Plantago for coughs and minor respiratory irritation, but not specifically for allergy management. Therefore, the primary justification for its use in allergies is traditional, with only weak scientific support and little clinical validation for this specific indication.
