Rating (out of 5): 4

Phleum pratense, commonly known as Timothy grass, is scientifically validated for use in treating and supporting respiratory allergies, particularly allergic rhinitis (hay fever). The primary application is through allergen-specific immunotherapy (also known as allergy shots or sublingual tablets), where standardized extracts of Timothy grass pollen are used to desensitize individuals to grass pollen allergens. Several randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trials have demonstrated that immunotherapy with Phleum pratense pollen extracts can significantly reduce symptoms of seasonal allergic rhinitis and decrease the need for symptomatic medications. Notably, sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) tablets containing Timothy grass pollen extract are approved by regulatory agencies such as the FDA and EMA (e.g., Grastek, Oralair) for the treatment of grass pollen-induced allergic rhinitis in both adults and children. The mechanism involves gradual immune modulation, shifting the immune response away from the allergic (Th2) pathway, and increasing regulatory T-cell activity. These effects have been substantiated by immunological studies showing reduced IgE responses and increased IgG4 blocking antibodies. Thus, the use of Phleum pratense for respiratory allergies is supported by robust clinical evidence and regulatory approval, rather than by traditional or herbal medicine practices.
