Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Luo Han Guo (Siraitia grosvenorii), also known as monk fruit, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for respiratory ailments, including coughs, sore throats, and symptoms often associated with allergies such as sneezing and congestion. The fruit is traditionally consumed as teas or lozenges to soothe the throat and clear "heat" and "phlegm" from the lungs, concepts rooted in TCM pathology. While these uses overlap with symptoms of respiratory allergies, there is limited to no direct scientific evidence demonstrating Luo Han Guo’s efficacy for allergic rhinitis or other allergy-specific respiratory conditions. Some laboratory studies indicate that mogrosides, the active compounds in Luo Han Guo, have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, which could theoretically modulate allergic responses. However, these findings are preliminary and have not been directly linked to clinical outcomes in human allergy sufferers. Therefore, current support for Luo Han Guo’s use in respiratory allergies is primarily based on traditional use, with only weak indirect scientific rationale and minimal clinical validation.
