Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra and related species) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, for the treatment of respiratory conditions that may include allergies, asthma, and bronchitis. In these traditions, licorice is believed to soothe mucous membranes, reduce inflammation, and serve as an expectorant. While there are some laboratory and animal studies suggesting that licorice and its main active compound, glycyrrhizin, possess anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, direct high-quality clinical evidence in humans for its efficacy in treating respiratory allergies specifically is limited. Most available studies focus on general inflammation or viral respiratory illnesses, rather than allergic rhinitis or other allergy-driven respiratory symptoms. Therefore, the use of licorice for respiratory allergies is primarily supported by traditional use, with modest scientific plausibility but insufficient clinical trials to strongly validate its effectiveness for this specific purpose.
