Lactobacillus (mixed strains) has some scientific evidence supporting its use for respiratory allergies, such as allergic rhinitis. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses have investigated the effect of probiotics, particularly Lactobacillus species, on allergic symptoms. Some studies indicate that supplementation with certain Lactobacillus strains (e.g., L. rhamnosus, L. casei, L. paracasei) may modestly reduce symptoms of allergic rhinitis, decrease nasal inflammation, or modulate immune responses—possibly by shifting the Th1/Th2 balance or enhancing regulatory T cell activity. For example, a 2015 meta-analysis in the journal Allergy found that probiotics, including Lactobacillus, produced a small but statistically significant improvement in quality of life and symptom scores in allergic rhinitis patients. However, results are inconsistent across studies, with some trials showing no benefit.

The overall quality of evidence is moderate to low due to heterogeneity in probiotic strains, dosages, study designs, and endpoints. No clear recommendations exist for the use of mixed Lactobacillus strains as a standard therapy for respiratory allergies, but they are sometimes used as adjunctive support. Safety profiles are generally good. The evidence does not currently justify strong recommendations, but there is scientific rationale and some preliminary clinical support for their use.
