Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Kefir, a fermented milk drink rich in probiotics, has been investigated for its potential benefits in supporting or treating respiratory allergies, such as allergic rhinitis and asthma. The scientific evidence is still emerging and primarily comes from in vitro (lab) studies, animal experiments, and a limited number of small human clinical trials. These studies suggest that kefir may modulate immune responses, particularly by influencing the balance of Th1/Th2 cytokines and enhancing regulatory T cell activity, which are relevant in allergic conditions. Several animal studies have demonstrated that kefir or its components can reduce airway inflammation and IgE levels, both of which are implicated in respiratory allergies. Furthermore, some research indicates that the probiotic bacteria in kefir may improve gut microbiota composition, indirectly affecting systemic and respiratory immune responses.

However, human data are sparse and results are mixed. A few small clinical studies have found modest improvements in allergic symptoms or markers in individuals consuming kefir, but larger, high-quality randomized controlled trials are lacking. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and preliminary evidence for kefir's use in supporting respiratory allergy management, the overall strength of evidence is low and not sufficient for definitive clinical recommendations at this time.
