Evidence supporting the use of: Iridoids
For the health condition: Allergies (respiratory)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Iridoids are a class of secondary metabolites found in various medicinal plants, including species traditionally used in herbal medicine for respiratory allergies. Their use for allergies, particularly respiratory allergies such as hay fever or allergic rhinitis, is primarily rooted in traditional medicine systems. For example, plants like Plantago lanceolata (ribwort plantain), Scrophularia species, and Gentiana species, which contain iridoids, have been traditionally used to alleviate symptoms associated with respiratory tract inflammation and allergic responses. The rationale in traditional systems often stems from observations of anti-inflammatory or soothing effects on mucous membranes.
However, scientific validation for the use of iridoids specifically in the treatment or support of respiratory allergies is limited. Some preclinical studies suggest that iridoids may possess anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, and a few have demonstrated inhibition of histamine release or modulation of cytokine production in vitro or in animal models. Despite these promising findings, there are currently no robust clinical trials directly supporting the efficacy of isolated iridoids in the management of respiratory allergies in humans. The evidence rating is therefore modest, reflecting a foundation in traditional use with only preliminary scientific support.
