Evidence supporting the use of: Hyperimmune milk peptides
For the health condition: Allergies (respiratory)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Hyperimmune milk peptides (HMP), derived from the colostrum or milk of cows immunized against specific antigens, have been investigated for their potential to modulate immune responses and reduce symptoms in respiratory allergies. The scientific rationale is based on the presence of immunoglobulins and bioactive peptides that may interact with the human immune system to reduce allergic inflammation or modify immune tolerance. Several small clinical trials and animal studies have explored the use of hyperimmune milk in conditions such as allergic rhinitis and asthma. For example, some studies suggest that HMP supplementation can reduce nasal symptoms, improve quality of life scores, or decrease markers of inflammation in individuals with allergic airways disease.
However, the overall evidence is limited in both quantity and quality. Most trials are small, sometimes open-label, with heterogeneous patient populations and varying formulations of hyperimmune milk. The mechanisms by which these peptides might modulate respiratory allergy are not fully elucidated, though proposed actions include modulation of cytokine production and enhancement of mucosal immunity. As of 2024, there are no major clinical guidelines recommending HMP for respiratory allergy, and systematic reviews conclude that more rigorous, well-powered trials are needed. In summary, while there is some scientific investigation and preliminary support, the evidence base is still emerging and not robust enough for strong clinical recommendations.
