Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Heal-All (Prunella vulgaris) has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine for a variety of ailments, including respiratory conditions such as allergies, though evidence is limited. Traditional systems—such as Western herbalism and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)—have employed Heal-All as an anti-inflammatory, astringent, and general “wellness” herb. In TCM, it is sometimes used to “clear heat” and support the respiratory tract, which may have indirectly led to its use for allergy-like symptoms. Folk medicine has often recommended Heal-All infusions for sore throats, coughs, and mild upper respiratory complaints; occasionally, this extends to allergic rhinitis due to its perceived soothing and anti-inflammatory actions.

However, rigorous clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness for respiratory allergies is lacking. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities for Heal-All, but these have not been adequately translated into clinical trials for allergy relief. The traditional use rating is therefore low, as documentation for respiratory allergies specifically is sparse compared to its broader use for wounds, sore throats, and skin issues. In summary, Heal-All’s application for respiratory allergies is primarily based on historical herbal practices and general anti-inflammatory reputation, rather than robust scientific or even widespread traditional precedent.
