Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chrysanthemum, particularly Chrysanthemum morifolium (ju hua in Traditional Chinese Medicine), has a long-standing history of use in East Asian traditional medicine for respiratory complaints, including symptoms associated with allergies such as sneezing, nasal congestion, and itchy eyes. In traditional practice, chrysanthemum is often included in herbal formulations aimed at "clearing heat" and "dispersing wind," concepts that are loosely associated with inflammation and immune responses in modern terminology. These formulas are commonly prescribed for conditions like hay fever and allergic rhinitis.

Despite this traditional use, scientific evidence directly supporting chrysanthemum for respiratory allergies is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest anti-inflammatory and antioxidative properties of chrysanthemum extracts, but research specifically investigating its efficacy in treating allergic rhinitis or similar respiratory allergies in humans is scarce. As a result, while there is a basis for its use rooted in tradition, robust clinical validation is lacking, and the evidence supporting its effectiveness for respiratory allergies remains weak.
