Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Herbal and botanical blends have a long history of traditional use for supporting respiratory allergies. Ingredients such as butterbur (Petasites hybridus), nettle (Urtica dioica), and elderflower (Sambucus nigra) have been used in various cultures for their potential anti-inflammatory, antihistamine, and immune-modulating effects. Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda also utilize complex blends including herbs like licorice root, perilla, and ginger for allergy symptoms. The rationale behind these blends is often based on observed effects in reducing sneezing, nasal congestion, and irritation, as well as their reported ability to reduce systemic inflammation.

While there is some modern scientific investigation into individual herbs (such as studies indicating butterbur and nettle may reduce allergic symptoms), robust clinical evidence for the efficacy of most herbal blends as a whole is limited. Most support comes from historical and ethnobotanical sources, case studies, and small trials. Systematic reviews generally conclude that while some ingredients show promise, more high-quality research is needed to confirm efficacy and safety, especially for multi-herb blends. Therefore, the use of herb/botanical blends for respiratory allergies is primarily justified by tradition, with moderate supporting evidence for select ingredients but not for blends as a whole.
