Fatty acid or fat/oil supplements, particularly those rich in omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), have been investigated for their potential role in supporting respiratory allergies, such as allergic rhinitis and asthma. The scientific rationale is based on the anti-inflammatory properties of certain fatty acids, especially omega-3s (e.g., EPA and DHA from fish oil), which may modulate immune responses and reduce inflammatory mediators involved in allergic reactions.

Several observational studies and small clinical trials suggest that higher intake of omega-3 fatty acids may be associated with a lower prevalence or severity of allergic diseases, including respiratory allergies. For example, some studies have found that children with higher maternal fish oil intake during pregnancy had a reduced risk of developing allergic sensitization and asthma. However, the evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in children and adults is inconsistent. Some RCTs report modest benefits on symptoms or medication use, while others find no significant effect compared to placebo.

Systematic reviews and meta-analyses generally conclude that while omega-3 supplementation is biologically plausible and safe, the current evidence is limited and not robust enough to recommend routine use of fatty acid supplements for the prevention or treatment of respiratory allergies. More high-quality, large-scale studies are needed. Thus, scientific support exists but is not strong or definitive.
