Bifidobacterium animalis has some emerging scientific evidence supporting its use to help manage respiratory allergies, such as allergic rhinitis. Several preclinical and small clinical studies have suggested that certain strains of B. animalis, particularly B. animalis subsp. lactis, may modulate immune responses associated with allergic diseases. The proposed mechanism involves promoting regulatory T-cell activity, shifting the Th1/Th2 balance, and influencing the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines. Some randomized controlled trials, including those with probiotic mixtures containing B. animalis, have reported modest reductions in allergy symptoms and markers of inflammation in people with allergic rhinitis. For example, a few studies have found reduced nasal symptoms and improved quality of life in adults and children with seasonal allergies after supplementation with B. animalis-containing probiotics.
However, the overall quality and quantity of evidence are still limited. Most trials involve small sample sizes and sometimes combine B. animalis with other probiotic strains, making it difficult to attribute effects solely to this bacterium. Meta-analyses suggest a potential benefit of probiotics in allergic rhinitis, but specific recommendations for B. animalis alone are premature. There is little evidence for its use in other respiratory allergies, such as asthma. In summary, while there is some scientific validation for the use of B. animalis in supporting respiratory allergy management, the evidence is preliminary and further high-quality, strain-specific clinical trials are needed.
