Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Beta-glucans are polysaccharides found in the cell walls of cereals, bacteria, and fungi, and they have been investigated for their potential immunomodulatory effects. There is a modest but growing body of scientific evidence exploring their use in supporting or mitigating symptoms of respiratory allergies, such as allergic rhinitis and asthma. The rationale for their use is based on their ability to modulate both innate and adaptive immune responses. Preclinical studies and some small clinical trials suggest that beta-glucans may help rebalance Th1/Th2 immune responses, potentially reducing allergic inflammation. For instance, a few randomized, placebo-controlled studies have shown that oral supplementation with beta-glucans (particularly from yeast or oats) can reduce the frequency and severity of upper respiratory tract infection symptoms, which overlap somewhat with allergic symptoms. However, direct evidence specifically addressing efficacy in allergic rhinitis or asthma in humans is still limited. Most human studies have small sample sizes and variable study designs, with some showing improvements in symptom scores and immune markers, while others find minimal or no benefit. Therefore, while there is a scientific basis and preliminary evidence supporting beta-glucans for respiratory allergies, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is moderate to low, and larger, well-designed clinical trials are needed to draw firm conclusions.
