Bacillus species, particularly Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus coagulans, are spore-forming probiotics that have been investigated for their immunomodulatory effects, which could be relevant in allergy (respiratory) management. Several animal studies and a limited number of small human trials suggest that Bacillus-based probiotics may help modulate immune responses, leading to reduced symptoms in allergic rhinitis and asthma. The proposed mechanism involves restoration of the gut microbiota and modulation of Th1/Th2 immune balance, potentially reducing IgE-mediated allergic inflammation. For instance, some studies have shown Bacillus subtilis supplementation resulted in decreased airway hyper-responsiveness and inflammatory markers in animal models of asthma. Human clinical evidence is more limited: a few small trials have evaluated probiotic mixtures containing Bacillus species for allergic rhinitis, with some reporting improvements in nasal symptoms, but these studies often include other probiotic strains and do not isolate the effect of Bacillus alone. Reviews of the literature emphasize that while the immunomodulatory potential is promising, the quality and quantity of clinical evidence are not sufficient for strong recommendations. Therefore, current support for Bacillus probiotics in respiratory allergy management is based on early scientific findings rather than extensive clinical validation.
