Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Andrographis paniculata has some scientific evidence supporting its use for respiratory allergies, though the data is limited and not robust. Traditionally, Andrographis is used in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine for infections, fever, and inflammation, but not specifically for allergic conditions. Recent scientific research, however, has explored its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties, which are relevant to allergic rhinitis and related respiratory allergies.

Several clinical studies have examined standardized Andrographis extracts in upper respiratory tract infections, showing a reduction in symptoms such as runny nose and sore throat, which overlap with allergic symptoms. A few small studies and animal models suggest Andrographis may inhibit histamine release and reduce inflammatory cytokines implicated in allergy pathophysiology. For example, a double-blind, placebo-controlled study (Caceres et al., 1999) found symptom improvement in patients with upper respiratory tract infections, although the study did not specifically target allergic rhinitis. Some in vitro and animal studies indicate that Andrographis components can modulate immune responses and reduce airway inflammation, which supports its theoretical benefit in respiratory allergies.

Despite these findings, high-quality, large-scale clinical trials specifically addressing Andrographis for respiratory allergies are lacking. The evidence to date suggests potential benefit, but it is not strong enough for firm clinical recommendations. Thus, Andrographis paniculata’s use for respiratory allergies is supported by a modest degree of scientific evidence but requires further validation.
