Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

American Basil (Ocimum americanum) has a history of traditional use for respiratory ailments, including allergies, particularly in folk medicine systems in regions where the plant is native or naturalized. The herb is sometimes used as an expectorant, to ease symptoms such as cough, congestion, or mild respiratory discomfort, and is occasionally employed for its purported anti-inflammatory and soothing properties. However, the evidence supporting its specific use for allergies, especially allergic rhinitis or other immunologic respiratory responses, is primarily anecdotal and rooted in tradition rather than scientific validation.

Only limited animal studies and in vitro research suggest that some species of Ocimum (basil) may have anti-inflammatory or immunomodulatory constituents, such as eugenol or rosmarinic acid, which could theoretically contribute to alleviating allergic responses. However, these findings are not specific to American Basil and, more importantly, have not been clearly translated into clinical practice or supported by human trials. There are no robust, peer-reviewed clinical studies that directly demonstrate the efficacy of American Basil for respiratory allergies in humans.

In summary, the use of American Basil for allergies (respiratory) is largely based on traditional herbal practices, with minimal scientific evidence and no established clinical validation.
