Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 5

Vitamin B1 (thiamine), specifically as thiamine pyrophosphate, is scientifically validated for use in the support and treatment of individuals with alcoholism. Chronic alcohol consumption interferes with the absorption, storage, and utilization of thiamine, leading to a deficiency that can result in severe neurological complications, most notably Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (WKS). WKS is characterized by confusion, ataxia, ophthalmoplegia (Wernicke’s encephalopathy), and, if untreated, can progress to irreversible memory loss and confabulation (Korsakoff’s psychosis). Thiamine supplementation is the cornerstone of both prevention and treatment of these complications in alcohol-dependent patients. Numerous clinical guidelines and hospital protocols recommend thiamine administration (often intravenously) for at-risk individuals, especially before glucose infusion, as glucose can exacerbate thiamine deficiency and precipitate WKS. The efficacy of thiamine supplementation in reducing neurological morbidity in alcohol-related thiamine deficiency is well established in the medical literature and is considered standard of care. Therefore, the use of thiamine in alcoholism is based on robust scientific evidence and clinical practice guidelines.
