Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

L-Ornithine-L-aspartate (LOLA) is not specifically used to treat alcoholism itself, but it is used in the management of hepatic encephalopathy (HE), a neuropsychiatric complication often seen in patients with chronic liver disease, including those with alcohol-induced liver damage. The rationale for using LOLA is based on its ability to lower blood ammonia levels, which contribute to the development of HE. Several randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses support the efficacy of LOLA in reducing ammonia and improving HE symptoms in patients with cirrhosis. However, there is minimal evidence directly supporting its use in treating alcoholism as a primary disorder or in promoting alcohol abstinence. Instead, LOLA's use is limited to addressing specific complications (like HE) secondary to alcohol-induced liver disease. Therefore, while there is scientific backing for LOLA’s use in managing hepatic encephalopathy, its role does not extend to treating alcoholism itself. The evidence rating is moderate for HE management but near zero for direct treatment of alcoholism.
