Evidence supporting the use of: Chinese Licorice
For the health condition: Alcoholism
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Chinese Licorice (Glycyrrhiza uralensis) has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) formulations for a wide range of health conditions, primarily as a harmonizer in herbal mixtures, to reduce toxicity, and to support the function of other herbs. In the context of alcoholism, Chinese Licorice is sometimes included in TCM formulas aimed at "detoxification" or supporting liver health, which may be indirectly related to alcohol use or abuse. However, there is no direct, well-documented tradition of using Chinese Licorice specifically to treat or support recovery from alcoholism itself. The use is more associative, based on its general role in supporting liver function and detox processes in TCM philosophy. Scientifically, there is no robust evidence or clinical studies demonstrating significant efficacy of Chinese Licorice for treating alcoholism or alcohol dependence. While some studies have explored the hepatoprotective effects of licorice constituents (like glycyrrhizin), these do not translate into established treatments for alcoholism. Thus, the evidence for its use in this context is very weak, with its inclusion being justified primarily by traditional practice rather than scientific validation or strong historical precedent for this specific condition.
