Vitamin E (particularly in the form of alpha-tocopheryl succinate) is an antioxidant that has been investigated for its potential role in preventing or slowing aging-related changes, especially those related to oxidative stress. Scientific interest in vitamin E for aging stems from the free radical theory of aging, which posits that oxidative damage to cells is a major mechanism of aging and age-related diseases. As a lipid-soluble antioxidant, vitamin E can interrupt the propagation of free radical reactions in cell membranes.

Some animal and laboratory studies suggest that vitamin E supplementation may reduce markers of oxidative damage and, in certain models, modestly extend lifespan or delay age-related decline. In humans, observational studies have associated higher dietary vitamin E intake with lower risk of some age-related diseases (such as cardiovascular disease and cognitive decline), but intervention trials have produced inconsistent or negative results. Large randomized controlled trials in humans have generally not shown a significant effect of vitamin E supplementation on lifespan or on the prevention of major age-related diseases. Furthermore, high-dose vitamin E supplementation has sometimes been linked to increased risk of adverse outcomes.
