Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sea Buckthorn Oil has garnered attention for its potential anti-aging properties, supported by a modest amount of scientific evidence. The oil is rich in bioactive compounds such as vitamins C and E, carotenoids, flavonoids, and omega fatty acids (especially omega-7), all of which are known to have antioxidant effects. These antioxidants help neutralize free radicals, which are implicated in the aging process of the skin and other tissues.

Some in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that Sea Buckthorn Oil can enhance skin hydration, promote collagen synthesis, and reduce oxidative stress, all of which contribute to healthier, more youthful skin. A few small human studies have indicated improvements in skin elasticity, moisture retention, and reduction in the appearance of wrinkles after topical and oral use of Sea Buckthorn Oil. For example, a 2017 study in Lipids in Health and Disease found that oral supplementation improved skin hydration and elasticity in middle-aged women.

However, large-scale, high-quality clinical trials are still lacking, and most evidence comes from small or preliminary studies. While the scientific rationale is plausible and early results are promising, more robust research is needed to confirm Sea Buckthorn Oil’s effectiveness in aging prevention and skin health. Thus, its use is currently supported by low-to-moderate scientific evidence.
