Evidence supporting the use of: Pterolstilbene
For the health condition: Aging (prevention)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Pterostilbene is a natural compound structurally similar to resveratrol and is found in foods such as blueberries and Pterocarpus marsupium. Its use in supporting aging and age-related processes is primarily justified by early scientific evidence rather than tradition. Preclinical studies in animal models and cell cultures suggest that pterostilbene possesses antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties, which are mechanistically linked to pathways associated with aging, such as oxidative stress reduction, sirtuin activation, and modulation of cellular senescence. Some studies indicate that pterostilbene may improve cognitive function, extend lifespan in simple organisms, and protect against age-related diseases such as neurodegeneration and metabolic syndrome.
However, high-quality clinical evidence in humans is limited. A few small-scale human trials have examined pterostilbene for metabolic health and cognitive effects, but robust data on its ability to prevent or reverse aging in humans are lacking. Safety profiles appear favorable at standard doses, but long-term effects remain unclear. Thus, while pterostilbene has a plausible biological rationale and promising preclinical data, the scientific validation for its use in aging prevention in humans remains preliminary, and more rigorous clinical trials are needed to establish efficacy and safety.
