Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Phytofluene is a colorless carotenoid found in various fruits and vegetables, and it is also present in some dietary supplements formulated for skin and aging support. The justification for its use in aging prevention is based on scientific rationale, although direct human evidence remains limited and preliminary. Phytofluene is known for its antioxidant properties, which may help counteract oxidative stress—a key factor in the skin aging process. Laboratory studies have demonstrated that phytofluene can absorb ultraviolet (UV) light and neutralize free radicals, suggesting a potential protective effect against UV-induced skin damage and photoaging.

A small number of in vitro and animal studies indicate that phytofluene may reduce inflammation, protect skin cells from oxidative damage, and possibly enhance the skin’s defense against environmental stressors. Some clinical studies on tomato extracts rich in carotenoids (including phytofluene) suggest improvements in skin appearance and markers of photoaging, but isolating the effects of phytofluene alone is difficult due to the presence of other active carotenoids like lycopene and phytoene. There are no large-scale, high-quality clinical trials specifically evaluating phytofluene supplementation for aging prevention in humans.

In summary, while the antioxidant and photoprotective properties of phytofluene provide a scientific basis for its potential use in aging prevention, direct evidence in humans is limited, and the overall strength of evidence is currently modest.
