Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lycium, particularly Lycium barbarum (goji berry), has a longstanding history in traditional Chinese medicine for promoting longevity and general vitality. In recent years, scientific studies have explored its potential anti-aging effects. Lycium berries are rich in antioxidants, especially carotenoids such as zeaxanthin, and polysaccharides, which have demonstrated free radical scavenging properties in vitro and in animal models. Some small human studies indicate that Lycium supplementation may improve markers of oxidative stress and immune function, both of which are linked to healthy aging. For example, a few clinical trials have found that goji berry juice consumption can increase antioxidant enzyme levels and reduce lipid peroxidation in middle-aged and older adults. However, these studies are generally limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and variable product quality. While the preclinical data are promising, robust, long-term clinical evidence directly supporting anti-aging effects in humans remains limited. Therefore, the use of Lycium for aging prevention is partially justified by emerging scientific evidence, but the overall strength of the evidence is currently modest and more rigorous research is needed.
