Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ligustrum Fruit (Ligustrum lucidum, also called "nu zhen zi" in Traditional Chinese Medicine) has a longstanding history of use in East Asian herbal medicine, particularly as a tonic for "liver and kidney yin deficiency," which is associated with aging symptoms such as graying hair, weakness, and decreased vision. In traditional contexts, it is considered to have rejuvenating and longevity-promoting properties. These beliefs are rooted in centuries of empirical use rather than rigorous scientific investigation.

Scientific studies on Ligustrum Fruit’s anti-aging effects are limited. Some laboratory research has suggested antioxidant and immunomodulatory effects in animal and cell studies, which theoretically could counteract some biological processes of aging. However, these findings are preliminary and have not been robustly demonstrated in human clinical trials. There is a lack of high-quality, peer-reviewed evidence directly linking Ligustrum Fruit supplementation with measurable anti-aging benefits in people. Most of the support for its use in aging prevention remains based on traditional usage and limited preclinical research, rather than strong scientific validation.
