Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lignans are a group of polyphenolic compounds found in plants, particularly seeds (such as flaxseed), whole grains, and vegetables. Their potential role in aging prevention is primarily attributed to their antioxidant properties and their ability to modulate hormone metabolism, particularly as phytoestrogens. Several experimental and observational studies have suggested that lignans may help reduce oxidative stress, which is implicated in cellular aging and the development of age-related diseases. Some epidemiological research has associated higher dietary intake of lignans with reduced risks of cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, and improved metabolic health, all of which are relevant to healthy aging. However, direct clinical evidence that lignans alone can prevent aging or extend human lifespan is limited. Most human studies focus on intermediate markers (such as inflammation or lipid levels) rather than direct measures of aging or longevity. Systematic reviews acknowledge a potential beneficial effect, but generally conclude that more high-quality, long-term human trials are needed. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and some supportive evidence for the use of lignans in the context of aging prevention, the overall strength of evidence is moderate to low at this time.
