Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ginkgo biloba has a long history of traditional use, particularly in Chinese medicine, for promoting longevity and preventing age-related decline. The leaves of the Ginkgo tree have been used for centuries to enhance memory, improve blood circulation, and combat various symptoms associated with aging such as cognitive impairment. The traditional rationale is rooted in Ginkgo’s believed effects on "qi" and circulation, supporting the brain and overall vitality as people age.

Scientifically, there is some evidence suggesting Ginkgo may have modest benefits for cognitive function, particularly in mild cognitive impairment and dementia. However, the results are mixed and generally not robust enough to conclusively recommend Ginkgo for general aging prevention. Most major reviews and meta-analyses of clinical trials find only limited efficacy, with benefits that are small and possibly due to placebo effects. Safety profiles are generally good, but there are concerns about bleeding risk, especially in older adults taking anticoagulants.

In summary, while Ginkgo is widely used in traditional medicine for supporting healthy aging and has some preliminary scientific support, the bulk of its use for aging prevention is justified by tradition rather than strong scientific validation.
