Rating (out of 5): 2

Fo-Ti (Polygonum multiflorum, also known as He Shou Wu) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) as a tonic for longevity and as an anti-aging remedy. In TCM, Fo-Ti is believed to "replenish the liver and kidney," "nourish the blood," and "restore youthful appearance and vitality." Its use for aging prevention is rooted in centuries of traditional practice, particularly the famous legend of Mr. He, who allegedly regained his youth and dark hair by consuming Fo-Ti. Scientific evidence supporting these claims is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest antioxidant properties and possible effects on hair pigmentation and lipid metabolism, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. A few small-scale studies have explored its effects on age-related conditions, but the results are inconclusive and often not directly related to the prevention of aging itself. Additionally, concerns have been raised about potential liver toxicity with prolonged use. In summary, while Fo-Ti is deeply embedded in traditional medicine systems for anti-aging purposes, current scientific validation is insufficient. Its reputation as a longevity herb is sustained primarily through tradition rather than robust clinical evidence.
