Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Ferulic acid and its derivatives are primarily used in dermatology and cosmetic formulations for their antioxidant properties, which are relevant to aging prevention. Scientific studies have shown that ferulic acid can neutralize free radicals and enhance the stability and efficacy of other antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E, in topical applications. This helps to reduce oxidative stress on the skin, a key factor implicated in extrinsic (environmental) skin aging. Evidence from in vitro and in vivo studies demonstrates that ferulic acid can decrease markers of photoaging, such as wrinkles and pigmentation, by inhibiting UV-induced damage, reducing inflammation, and modulating collagen degradation. However, most robust data comes from preclinical research and small-scale human trials, often involving combination products rather than ferulic acid derivatives alone. There is limited evidence regarding its systemic use for overall aging prevention outside dermatological contexts. Overall, while the use of ferulic acid derivatives for aging prevention—especially skin aging—is supported by moderate scientific evidence, large-scale, long-term clinical trials are still needed to confirm efficacy and establish optimal formulations and dosages.
