Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Epimedium extract, also known as Horny Goat Weed, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for a variety of conditions, including those related to aging and longevity. In TCM, Epimedium is considered a "yang tonic," believed to invigorate kidney function, strengthen bones, and enhance vitality—attributes commonly sought after for aging prevention. Historical texts reference its use to combat "decline of life force" and age-associated ailments such as decreased libido, joint discomfort, and frailty. However, scientific validation for its anti-aging effects in humans is limited. Some laboratory and animal studies suggest that icariin, a key active compound in Epimedium, may exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, and could influence cellular aging pathways, but these findings are preliminary and not yet substantiated by robust clinical trials in humans. Thus, while Epimedium extract's use for aging prevention is rooted in tradition, the current scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for this purpose is weak, meriting a low evidence rating.
