Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ellagic acid is a polyphenolic compound found in numerous fruits and vegetables, such as pomegranates, raspberries, and walnuts. Its use for aging prevention primarily stems from its antioxidant properties, which have been studied in laboratory and animal models. Research suggests that ellagic acid can scavenge free radicals and reduce oxidative stress, a key factor in cellular aging and age-related diseases. Some in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that ellagic acid may protect skin from ultraviolet (UV)-induced damage, reduce inflammation, and modulate pathways associated with cellular senescence and apoptosis. For example, a few studies have shown that topical or oral ellagic acid can improve skin elasticity and reduce wrinkle formation in mice exposed to UV radiation.

However, robust clinical evidence in humans is limited. Most studies are preclinical, and while they provide a rationale for further investigation, there is a lack of large, well-designed human trials directly linking ellagic acid supplementation to significant anti-aging effects. As such, while there is a scientific basis for its purported use in aging prevention, the quality and quantity of evidence supporting its efficacy in humans is currently low to moderate, warranting a cautious interpretation of its benefits in this context.
