Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a hormone produced naturally by the adrenal glands, and its levels decline with age. The use of DHEA as a supplement for aging prevention is based on the idea that restoring DHEA to youthful levels might delay or reverse some aspects of aging. There is scientific interest in DHEA because it serves as a precursor to other hormones, including estrogens and androgens. Some early studies suggested that DHEA supplementation might improve skin appearance, bone density, sexual function, and well-being in older adults. However, clinical trial results have been mixed and often show only modest benefits, if any. Major reviews, such as those by the Cochrane Collaboration and the National Institutes of Health, conclude that current evidence does not robustly support DHEA supplementation for general aging prevention. Reported benefits in some small studies are not consistently replicated, and potential risks (such as effects on hormone-sensitive tissues and cancer risk) remain concerns. Thus, while there is scientific interest and some preliminary evidence, high-quality, long-term studies do not justify routine DHEA use for aging prevention at this time.
