Ligustrum lucidum, commonly known as Chinese Ligustrum or "Nu Zhen Zi," has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), particularly for supporting longevity and counteracting the effects of aging. In classical TCM texts, the berries are considered a yin tonic, believed to nourish the liver and kidney, replenish vital essence (jing), and thus slow the aging process. They are often included in herbal formulas aimed at addressing symptoms associated with aging, such as greying hair, weak lower back and knees, dizziness, and blurred vision.

From a scientific perspective, some in vitro and animal studies suggest antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and hepatoprotective properties for Ligustrum lucidum extracts. These actions theoretically could address some biological aspects of aging, such as oxidative stress and immune decline. However, robust clinical evidence in humans to support Ligustrum lucidum as an anti-aging agent is lacking. Most available studies are preclinical and do not directly measure aging or age-related outcomes in humans. Therefore, while its use is well justified by traditional practice, scientific validation remains limited at this time.
