Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Carotene, particularly beta-carotene, is a precursor to vitamin A and acts as an antioxidant. Antioxidants have been proposed to help prevent or slow the aging process by neutralizing free radicals, which are molecules that can damage cells and contribute to aging and age-related diseases. Some epidemiological studies have associated diets high in carotenoid-rich fruits and vegetables with a lower risk of chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease and certain cancers, which are linked to aging. However, direct evidence that carotene supplementation prevents aging or extends lifespan in humans is weak. Large randomized controlled trials, such as the CARET and ATBC studies, found that beta-carotene supplementation did not reduce cancer or mortality risk and, in some populations (e.g., smokers), may increase risk. Most scientific reviews conclude that while carotene is an important dietary nutrient, supplementation has not been proven to prevent aging or age-related decline. The evidence primarily supports a role for carotene as part of a healthy diet rather than as a standalone anti-aging intervention.
