Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

The Argan tree (Argania spinosa), particularly its oil, has been traditionally used in Morocco for skin and hair care, often attributed to anti-aging benefits. Scientific research provides moderate support for its use in aging prevention. Argan oil is rich in tocopherols (vitamin E), polyphenols, sterols, squalene, and unsaturated fatty acids, all of which are known for their antioxidant properties. Several in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that argan oil can protect skin cells from oxidative stress and improve skin hydration and elasticity, both of which are important in the prevention of aging signs. Human clinical studies are more limited but suggest that topical application of argan oil can improve skin elasticity and moisture in postmenopausal women, potentially reducing visible signs of aging. However, most studies are small and of short duration, and more extensive, well-controlled clinical trials are needed to confirm these effects. Overall, while there is a strong traditional basis for its use and moderate scientific validation, especially regarding its antioxidant content and moisturizing effects, the evidence is not yet robust enough for a higher rating.
