Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Apigenin, a flavonoid found in many fruits, vegetables, and herbs (notably parsley, celery, and chamomile), has been studied for its potential anti-aging properties. Scientific interest in apigenin as an anti-aging compound is based primarily on preclinical research. Studies in cell cultures and animal models suggest that apigenin exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and senolytic activities—features that are thought to mitigate mechanisms of aging at the cellular level. For instance, apigenin has been shown to scavenge free radicals and reduce oxidative stress, which is implicated in cellular aging and age-related diseases. Some studies also indicate that apigenin may modulate pathways associated with cell senescence, such as p53 and SIRT1, and may help maintain mitochondrial function and reduce chronic inflammation.

However, there are currently no large-scale, high-quality human clinical trials directly demonstrating that apigenin supplementation slows aging or extends lifespan in humans. The available evidence is largely limited to animal models (e.g., mice) and in vitro experiments. Therefore, while the mechanistic rationale is supported by laboratory research, clinical validation in humans is lacking. In summary, apigenin is scientifically investigated for anti-aging purposes, but evidence for its efficacy in humans remains preliminary.
