Evidence supporting the use of: Antler
For the health condition: Aging (prevention)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Antler, particularly deer antler velvet, has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and other East Asian healing systems as a tonic for vitality, longevity, and general well-being, which includes its use for aging prevention. In TCM, antler velvet is thought to "nourish the Yin," invigorate the "Kidney," and support vital energy, which collectively are believed to slow the effects of aging and promote longevity. These traditional uses are based on centuries of anecdotal reports and the doctrine of signatures, rather than rigorous scientific evaluation.
Modern scientific studies on antler velvet for aging prevention are limited and largely inconclusive. Some small-scale animal and in vitro studies have suggested that antler extracts possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunomodulatory properties, which are theoretically relevant to the aging process. However, clinical studies in humans are scarce, generally of low quality, and do not provide robust evidence for its effectiveness in slowing or preventing aging. No large, well-controlled human trials have substantiated the traditional claims.
In summary, while antler is traditionally used for aging prevention, scientific support for this use is very weak, and evidence for efficacy is minimal at best.
