Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Anserine is a naturally occurring dipeptide found predominantly in the skeletal muscle and brain of birds and fish. Recent scientific research has investigated its potential benefits in aging, primarily due to its antioxidant and anti-glycation properties. Preclinical studies and a small number of human trials have suggested that anserine, often in combination with carnosine, may help reduce cognitive decline and oxidative stress associated with aging. For example, a randomized controlled trial published in 2018 (Hisatsune et al., Journal of Alzheimer's Disease) showed that supplementation with anserine and carnosine improved cognitive function in elderly subjects with mild cognitive impairment. Other studies have reported that anserine can scavenge reactive oxygen species and inhibit the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which are linked to cellular aging.

Despite these promising findings, the overall quality and quantity of clinical evidence remain low. Most studies involve small sample sizes, short durations, or use anserine in combination with carnosine, making it difficult to isolate anserine’s specific effects. There are also no large-scale, long-term clinical trials confirming its efficacy in aging prevention. Therefore, while the use of anserine for aging is based on emerging scientific data, the evidence is still preliminary and not robust enough to warrant strong recommendations.
