Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Angelica gigas Nakai, also known as Korean angelica, has been investigated in recent years for its potential anti-aging properties. The roots of this plant contain bioactive compounds such as decursin and decursinol angelate, which have demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in preclinical models. Several in vitro and animal studies have shown that extracts of Angelica gigas can help mitigate oxidative stress, a key factor in cellular aging. For instance, studies have reported that administration of Angelica gigas extracts in aged rodents improved antioxidant enzyme activities and reduced markers of oxidative damage.

Additionally, some research has explored the neuroprotective effects of the plant, suggesting a potential benefit in age-related cognitive decline. However, most of the evidence remains preclinical; there are few, if any, robust clinical trials in humans directly evaluating Angelica gigas for anti-aging effects. Traditional use in Korean herbal medicine does include applications for "rejuvenation" and supporting vitality, but the concept of aging prevention is largely a modern interpretation.

In summary, while there is some scientific basis—mainly from animal and cell studies—for considering Angelica gigas in the context of aging prevention, clinical evidence in humans is still lacking. Thus, the overall strength of evidence is modest.
