Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Alaska Blueberry (Vaccinium alaskaense) is used in aging prevention largely due to its high content of antioxidants, particularly anthocyanins, flavonoids, and vitamin C. Scientific studies on blueberries generally—not always specific to Alaska Blueberry—have demonstrated that these compounds can reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, which are key contributors to cellular aging and degenerative diseases. Research published in peer-reviewed journals suggests that regular consumption of blueberries is associated with improved cognitive function in older adults, slower cognitive decline, and reduced risk of neurodegenerative diseases. Animal studies have shown that blueberry supplementation can enhance neuronal signaling and delay age-related declines in motor and cognitive functions. However, while the broader genus Vaccinium (including highbush and wild blueberries) has been more extensively studied, there are fewer direct clinical trials focusing exclusively on Alaska Blueberry. Thus, the scientific support is extrapolated from studies on related species. There is also a long tradition among Alaska Native peoples of using these berries for general health, but the primary justification for anti-aging benefits is rooted in modern phytochemical and clinical research. Overall, scientific evidence supports the potential anti-aging effects of Alaska Blueberry, though more targeted research would strengthen the case further.
