Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Lodhtree (Symplocos racemosa), also known as Lodhra, is traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for a variety of gynecological conditions, including afterbirth pain (pain experienced by women following childbirth, often due to uterine contractions as the uterus returns to its pre-pregnancy size). Historical texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita mention Lodhra as an herb with "stambhana" (astringent) and "shodhana" (cleansing) properties, which are believed to help in reducing bleeding and supporting uterine health after delivery. Its use for afterbirth pain is mainly based on its reputed ability to tone and soothe the uterus, as well as to control excessive postpartum bleeding. However, scientific validation for these specific uses is limited. A few in vitro and animal studies have suggested anti-inflammatory and astringent properties of Symplocos racemosa bark extracts, but direct clinical evidence for efficacy in managing afterbirth pain in humans is lacking. There are no high-quality randomized controlled trials or robust pharmacological studies focusing on postpartum pain relief specifically. Thus, while its use is well-established in traditional practice, the evidence supporting its effectiveness for afterbirth pain is weak from a scientific standpoint.
