Rating (out of 5): 1

Avens (Geum urbanum), also known as herb bennet, has a history of traditional use in European herbal medicine, including applications related to childbirth. In folk practices, Avens was sometimes administered as a tonic to support women's recovery after childbirth and to help manage "afterpains"—the uterine contractions that occur as the uterus returns to its pre-pregnancy size. This use is referenced in some 19th and early 20th-century herbal texts, which often attributed Avens with astringent and tonic properties believed to be helpful for reducing pain and promoting healing.

However, there is a lack of rigorous scientific research or clinical trials to validate the effectiveness of Avens for treating afterbirth pain. The traditional use appears to be based on its general astringent qualities, which herbalists thought might tone uterine tissues, but no specific pharmacological action has been demonstrated for this indication. Modern herbal reference works may mention Avens' historical use but do not offer evidence-based recommendations for its use in postpartum care. As such, while Avens' use for afterbirth pain is rooted in tradition, the evidence supporting its efficacy is weak and not substantiated by modern science.
