Rating (out of 5): 2

Potentilla anserina (commonly known as Silverweed or Anserina) has a long history of use in European traditional medicine, particularly for gynecological issues such as afterbirth pain (the cramping and discomfort experienced by women after childbirth as the uterus contracts back to its normal size). Traditional herbalists and midwives have used infusions and decoctions of Anserina for its reputed antispasmodic and astringent effects. These properties were believed to help alleviate uterine cramps and pain after delivery. The use of Anserina for this purpose is recorded in various ethnobotanical sources and historical herbals, especially in regions such as Germany and the British Isles.

However, robust scientific evidence validating its efficacy for afterbirth pain is lacking. There are a few in vitro and animal studies suggesting that extracts of Potentilla anserina may exhibit spasmolytic (muscle relaxant) activity on smooth muscle, which could theoretically support its traditional use for uterine cramps. Nonetheless, there are no well-designed clinical trials investigating its safety or effectiveness specifically for afterbirth pain in humans. Thus, its use for afterbirth pain is justified primarily by tradition and historical use, not by contemporary scientific validation.
