Evidence supporting the use of: Whole adrenal glandular
For the body system: Adrenal Glands
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Whole adrenal glandular supplements are primarily justified by traditional use, rather than robust scientific evidence. Historically, glandular therapy—using animal gland extracts to "support" the corresponding human organ—has roots in early 20th-century naturopathic and alternative medicine. Proponents believed that consuming extracts from animal adrenal glands could help support or "nourish" human adrenal function, especially in cases of so-called "adrenal fatigue" or stress-related exhaustion. However, these concepts are not recognized by mainstream medicine, and "adrenal fatigue" is not an established medical diagnosis.
Scientific studies evaluating the efficacy, safety, or mechanisms of whole adrenal glandular supplements are extremely limited. There is no high-quality clinical evidence demonstrating that oral adrenal gland extracts have any positive effect on human adrenal health or hormone production. In fact, concerns exist regarding the potential for glandulars to contain active hormones or contaminants, which could pose safety risks. Regulatory agencies, including the FDA, do not approve glandular supplements for supporting adrenal function.
In summary, while whole adrenal glandulars are used based on tradition within certain alternative health circles, there is little to no scientific validation for their efficacy in supporting the adrenal glands. Use should be approached with caution given the lack of evidence and potential safety concerns.
