Evidence supporting the use of: Salidroside
For the body system: Adrenal Glands
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Salidroside is a bioactive compound found primarily in Rhodiola rosea, a plant traditionally used in adaptogenic herbal medicine. Scientific research has explored salidroside's potential to support the adrenal glands and the body’s stress response, which is closely linked to adrenal function. Preclinical studies in animals and in vitro suggest that salidroside exerts anti-fatigue, anti-stress, and neuroprotective effects, possibly by modulating the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and reducing cortisol levels. For example, several studies have demonstrated that salidroside can normalize stress-induced elevations in corticosterone (the rodent equivalent of cortisol) and enhance resistance to stress in animal models.
Human clinical trials on Rhodiola rosea extracts (which contain salidroside) have shown reduced fatigue and improved mental performance under stressful conditions, though these studies often focus on the whole extract rather than isolated salidroside. The evidence specifically linking salidroside to direct adrenal gland support in humans is limited, but the mechanistic understanding from animal studies and the adaptogenic effects observed in human trials with Rhodiola extracts provide a rationale for its use in this context. Overall, while there is promising preclinical data and some supportive clinical evidence, more targeted human research on salidroside alone is needed to strengthen the scientific justification for its use in supporting adrenal function.
