Rhizomes from certain plants, such as Glycyrrhiza glabra (licorice root) and Zingiber officinale (ginger), have a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine systems to support adrenal gland function and help the body manage stress. In Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, licorice root is thought to "tonify" the adrenal glands and is used in formulas intended to combat fatigue and support energy levels. The rationale is based on observed effects in patients and longstanding herbal doctrine rather than evidence from modern clinical trials.

Scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of rhizome-based ingredients for adrenal support is limited and inconclusive. Some laboratory studies on licorice root have shown that it can affect cortisol metabolism by inhibiting the enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase, leading to increased cortisol availability. However, human data are minimal, and there are safety concerns with long-term licorice consumption, such as hypokalemia and hypertension. As for ginger, there is little to no direct evidence supporting its effects on adrenal function specifically, though it is used more broadly for inflammation and nausea.

In summary, while there is a strong tradition for using certain rhizomes to "support" the adrenal glands, scientific validation for these effects is modest at best, and more rigorous studies are needed.
