Rhaponticum (commonly known as Rhaponticum carthamoides or Leuzea) has a history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Russia and parts of Asia, for its purported adaptogenic properties. Adaptogens are substances believed to help the body resist physical, chemical, or biological stressors, and as such, are often claimed to support adrenal gland function. The roots of Rhaponticum have been used traditionally to enhance physical performance, reduce fatigue, and improve recovery from stress, which indirectly relates to adrenal support as the adrenal glands are involved in the body's stress response.
While traditional use is significant, there is limited high-quality scientific evidence directly linking Rhaponticum to specific support of the adrenal glands. Most studies have focused on its active compounds, such as ecdysteroids (notably 20-hydroxyecdysone), and their potential effects on physical endurance, muscle mass, and general vitality. Some animal and in vitro studies suggest adaptogenic and anti-fatigue effects, but robust clinical trials in humans—especially those specifically examining adrenal function—are lacking. Therefore, while the traditional use for stress and vitality can be extrapolated to adrenal support, this claim is not strongly validated by modern science.
