Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Panax pseudoginseng, also known as "Tienchi ginseng" or "San Qi," has a long history of use in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) primarily for its ability to promote blood circulation, stop bleeding, and reduce swelling and pain. Its use for supporting the adrenal glands, however, stems more from the broader ginseng family’s traditional association with "adaptogenic" properties, which are believed to help the body cope with stress. In TCM, herbs like Panax ginseng and related species are considered to strengthen "Qi" (vital energy), which could be interpreted in modern terms as supporting resilience to stress, possibly including adrenal function.

However, scientific studies specifically investigating Panax pseudoginseng’s effects on adrenal glands are lacking. Most research focuses on its saponin content (notably notoginsenosides) and their cardiovascular, anti-inflammatory, and hemostatic effects. While some extrapolate from studies on Panax ginseng, which has more substantial research relating to stress adaptation and possible effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, Panax pseudoginseng itself does not have robust scientific validation for supporting adrenal health. Therefore, its use for this purpose is justified by tradition and association with the broader ginseng family, rather than direct scientific evidence.
