Evidence supporting the use of: Kelp
For the body system: Adrenal Glands
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Kelp, a type of seaweed rich in iodine and other minerals, has traditionally been used in herbal and nutritional practices with the belief that it may support thyroid health, which can indirectly influence the adrenal glands due to the interconnectedness of endocrine functions. However, there is little direct traditional or scientific evidence specifically supporting kelp for adrenal gland health. Most references to kelp relate to its iodine content and its role in thyroid hormone production, rather than direct adrenal support. The adrenal glands require a range of nutrients for optimal function, but kelp's main contribution—iodine—does not directly impact adrenal hormone synthesis or function. Therefore, while some herbal traditions may include kelp in formulas for overall endocrine or "glandular" support, this is not based on direct traditional use for the adrenals or on scientific studies demonstrating efficacy. Most modern supplement uses for adrenal support with kelp are extrapolated from its effects on the thyroid, not from targeted adrenal research. In summary, kelp’s use for adrenal gland support can be considered “traditional” at best, generally rated as low evidence, and is not substantiated by direct scientific research.
